The Made in Mexico Road Worn Fender Telecaster
First let me say, that I may sound like an expert in this review. (That’s just me, folks, I can’t even help it. It’s just the way I roll, dawg.) But the truth is, I’m not an expert on guitar manufacturing nor do I keep abreast or up to date on the latest products or news surrounding the guitar and amplifier or musical instrument industry. Not really. Not like the, I’m...

Pretty Shabby Chic: 'Fashion's Night Out' in...
Okay, right up front I should say that my attending the recent Fashion’s Night Out in Beverly Hills on September 8th, 2011 was for the sole purpose of shooting some frames of fast film with some even faster Leica and Zeiss glass mounted on my M7. But I’m a critical sort of motherfucker. So, in between trying to catch some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in my...

One Picture
I’ve been shooting street photography digitally in Los Angeles for about 10 years. I’ve amassed hundreds of images that express what I see and have wanted to capture in this city. I’ve recently taken to shooting film, however, with a Leica rangefinder and various lenses. I’m not here to advocate some special magic around Leica. But film is another story entirely.  And...

The Road to Somewhere Else
“I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don’t notice it.” – ‘Shug’ Avery in The Color Purple by Alice Walker I-15, the highway to and from Las Vegas, is traveled by an endless caravan of Southern Californians every year, alternately speeding and crawling their way to Sin City to pass the hours into weekends throwing money away in smoky casinos. With the...

Shooting film with the Leica M7
Shooting nothing but film now out of an M7 I picked up unused but previously owned by a collector for half what they go for new. I’m a 50mm guy. I have a Leica 50 Summicron which is a great great lens for who I am but I also just bought another 50, a Zeiss Sonnar, which is a lens design from all the way back in the 1930s. Zeiss has upgraded the housing, of course, and coatings, but it...

Dealey Plaza Dust Up
Continuing with my ongoing consolidation of pre-blogged material from this year that was originally posted elsewhere, I now bring to you maybe the most significant thing that happened to me this year. You can scroll way down into the infinite past for the original post, which I’ll reblog in a chronologically correct manner. Here goes. Monday after the Super Bowl we visited Dealey Plaza in...

What decade is it where you are?
This is an ongoing series intending to show or exploit the fact that much of Los Angeles, probably thought by most people around the world to be a modern American city, is actually stuck in a time warp. The truth about this city is that, other than some flashy iconic exceptions, Los Angeles is very old as opposed to modern and most of it dates in architectural design and construction from...
